Amanda Hale

Independent Author

I began as a playwright and worked in theatre for many years in Montréal and Toronto; gradually branching out in other genres. I am a writer of novels, poetry, essays, screenplays and, most recently, an opera libretto. Here I present an excerpt from my novel The Reddening Path, about a Guatemalan child adopted and raised in Toronto. She returns as an adult to Guatemala to search for her birth mother. The essay I present - Imagining a Geometry of the Soul - was written in 2010 for an anthology published by University of Brno, Czech Republic - “Living Between the Lines: Transgressive (Auto)Biography as Genre and Method.” My libretto for the opera "Pomegranate" was premiered in Toronto June 2019, and will be produced and toured by the Canadian Opera Company in 2022/23.
